Cockroaches (They are common through the world and they are found all over. Did you know that Cockroaches are known to carry 33 types of bacteria, 6 parasitic worms and trigger asthma attacks? Cockroaches can run up to three miles in an hour, which means they spread germs and bacteria throughout a home/ business premise very quickly.

In Kenya, we are mostly affected by 3 types of roaches, that’s German cockroach, Oriental cockroach and American cockroach.
German Cockroach
German cockroaches can carry salmonellosis (food poisoning), typhoid fever, cholera, gastroenteritis, dysentery, listeriosis, giardia, and E. coli. They pass these diseases to humans by walking over food or food-preparation areas, utensils, and other spaces. German cockroaches are also implicated in the development of allergies and asthma. Their cast-off skins, feces, and dead bodies can cause asthma attacks in children.
Oriental Cockroach
Oriental cockroaches exhibit a shiny black to a dark reddish-brown color. As adults, the male and female cockroaches, though both large in size, are quite different in appearance. They are mostly found in dumpsters and sewers.
American Cockroaches
American cockroaches are not harmful, because they don’t bite often, but are harmful because they spread bacteria, human pathogens, and parasitic worms. Common bacteria you can contact are salmonellosis, cholera, campylobacteriosis, leprosy, listeriosis, and gastroenteritis.

- Smear marks
- Shed skin
- Damage – look for unusual signs of damage, not just on food packaging. Cockroaches will attack organic goods including leather and books.
- Unusual odor
- Live cockroaches in your bathrooms and kitchens
